Flash MX - Tutorials

Flash MX is now obsolete software - but should you get a copy of it you may find these pages interesting and educational.

Adobe declared its Flash player EOL on December 31, 2020. On January 12, 2021, it pushed an update to its Flash player that blocked all Flash content from running.... :(

Flash was a very powerful designers tool.

Back in the day many professional programmers and artists used Adobe Flash applications to present their work online.

Rather than sending cards by post many people now send e-cards. Once you had mastered the basics in Flash you could make your own e-cards.

Used in conjunction with a graphics package such as Fireworks you could create an interactive document called a 'swf' (Shockwave Flash) with animation within it. The effects you can achieve are only limted by your imagination.

You can add sound to your creations but Flash only allows you to import certain types of sound file, so see here for details.

There is a link to a glossary of terms used within 'Flash'. If you come across a term you are not used to - take a look in the glossary for guidance.

General Skills

  • Making graphics using Fireworks - you should initaially make graphic assets in fireworks and then import them into Flash - it is much easier to do this at an earlier stage.
  • Layers - the best way to construct your Flash Document is to use layers - read up on them before you begin!
  • Using a Shared Flash Library (buttons and sounds) - at our school I have put assets in a library on the network for all to use - ask your ICT teacher - there is probably a similar facility at your school!

The tutorials below will further develop your basic skills. I suggest you work steadily through them in order, as later projects assume you have learnt fhow to navigate the program and perform basic tasks.

These give you the opportunity to use a simple bit of Action Scripts and a lot of imagination and creativity - they are fun! You create a 'swf' (Originally, the term swf was used as an abbreviation for ShockWave Flash. This usage has now been changed to the backronym Small Web Format).
