Action-Adventure Games

Action-adventure games combine elements of their two component genres. They have some sort of 'quest' for the protagonist to undertake and in order to do that there is a need to explore the surroundings, gather items that might be useful into an inventory, solve puzzzles and employ action game skills when climbing, swimming, fighting, shooting etc.

In 1979 while adapting a text game to an Atari console with only a joystick for control, designer Warren Robinett created a new genre that has become very popular.

Because of their prevalence on video game consoles and the current rarity of pure adventure games, action-adventure games are often confusingly called "adventure games" by gamers.
