Glossary: Protagonist

A protagonist is the name given to the main character in a drama or other literary work. It is therefore also used as the main character in a video game.

In ancient Greek drama, it was the name given to the first actor to engage in dialogue with the chorus.

It is the leading or principal figure - the leader of a cause - a champion.

In games you are often the protagonist - sometimes that is a character you cannot change - other times you design your own protagonist - choosing not only physical features but personality traits, strengths and weaknesses in many RPG games.
