Cyber Security: Social Engineering Social engineering (in the context of information security) is the use of deception to manipulate individuals into divulging confidential or personal information that may be used for fraudulent purposes. Anyone with an 'online presence' should be aware that they are a target for forms of social engineering. The commonest form of social engineering attack in the cyber world is phishing - it is an attempt by attackers to steal valuable information by pretending to be a trustworthy party. For example an attacker might impersonate a bank official to obtain credit card numbers or bank account details. |
